The Fruit of my Woman by Han Kang

In this strange and beautiful story, a woman gradually transforms into plant life, moving away from the pressures of domestic and social life towards another form of existence. The story explores bodily change, refusal, longing and the porous boundary between the human and vegetal world.

Han Kang is a South Korean writer whose books include The Vegetarian, Human Acts, The White Book and We Do Not Part. The Vegetarian, which grew partly out of The Fruit of My Woman, won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, and Han Kang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2024. Her writing often attends to violence, grief, silence, transformation and the limits of what the self can endure or express.
